“Insights in Research on Carbon Capture and Storage”

After the slight difficulties we had with the last
lecture, we are more than happy to end this semester's lecture series with a very interesting topic presented by an external expert: Dr. Markus Bauer from the University of Bayreuth. He will talk about the upcoming CCS technology that you certainly heard about in the media or during your studies. CCS means Carbon capture and storage, i.e. sequestration of CO2 and its underground storage. This technology could offer a means to allow the continued use of the world's hydrocarbon resources while still taking care of climate change. However, many doubts concerning the efficiency, applicability and safety of this technology exist. Learn more about a much discussed technology of tomorrow.

As this is the last lecture for this semester we really hope that you can afford a break in your exam preparations to spend an inspiring evening with us. We look forward to nice discussions and relaxed conversation afterwards with a beer with you. We also will try to provide small snacks make you feel comfortable at our closure lecture.

Life without phosphorous?

The Green Bug Lectures start into their fourth turn! The Green Bug Lectures now take place every first Tuesday in a month, the preliminary program is shown below.

This semester's lecture starts with a presentation by Jennifer Bilbao from the IGB, Fraunhofer Institute about the scarcity of phosphorus. While the awareness for the scarcity of oil, minerals and even water has finally made its way to the public mind, the scarcity of the essential nutrient Phosphorous still remains fairly unknown. As early as 2035 it is calculated that the demand for phosphorus will outpace the supply. Here we can find an enlightening example of the urgent need to close matter cycles in order to achieve a sustainable resource management.

The last presentation of the last semester almost disappeared in a jungle of traveling and exams. But I unearthed it in order to give it a second chance to be shared among us. We discussed the possibilities of reacting to the manifold crisis that you don’t need to be an academic to realize we are in. Resource wars?

This semester ends soon, but not without a last green bug lectures before we start our well deserved holidays! Remember we promised you that we will have an expert for geopolitics coming from the Netherlands to present for us? Finally, he is coming to hold a lecture on “Resource wars? Geopolitical implications of increasingly scarce natural resources”.

Thus, the last lecture for this semester is again to cover a broader, general subject. Water, oil, minerals, arable land… natural resources that seemed inexhaustible are all going to become increasingly scarce in this century. The leading world powers react with different strategies on that challenge. What are these strategies? Are they leading the world into large military conflicts? What are the different geopolitical scenarios for the next decades? These are just some of the issues Jaakko Kooroshy is going to explore.

Jaakko holds a degree in international economics as well as in social sciences. Currently he works as an expert for geopolitical developments at The Hague Center for Strategy Studies in the Netherlands. He published a study on the geopolitical implications of the melting ice shield in the arctic recently, and another one on the scarcity of minerals for the Dutch government.

We are very happy that we managed to present you a real external expert at the end of this semester’s lectures. So please, even if you feel busy preparing for the exams: take a break, take your time thinking about the broader issues of what is happening in our world, and enjoy a very interesting talk and discussion supported by FRESH food and cool drinks.
